Every few months a headline announces that "SEO is dead". Every few months, Google reports record search revenue. Both cannot be fully true, and that contradiction is exactly why business owners are confused about where to spend their marketing budget in 2026.
The short answer the data gives is this: people are not searching less; websites are getting clicked less. Google's query volume is at an all-time high, but a growing share of those searches end on the results page itself, answered by an AI Overview, a map pack or a featured snippet. At the same time, a second search universe has appeared inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, where the "result" is a written answer that may or may not mention your brand.
That is why three acronyms now sit side by side in every marketing plan: SEO (search engine optimisation, ranking in classic search results), AEO (answer engine optimisation, being the answer in featured snippets, voice assistants and AI Overviews) and GEO (generative engine optimisation, being cited and recommended by large language models like ChatGPT and Gemini). This report gathers the 2025–2026 statistics behind all three, with a dedicated section on India.
Every stat carries a label so you know exactly what you are quoting:
A word of caution before the numbers. Search studies use very different methods: clickstream panels, Search Console data, surveys and company statements. A 58% CTR drop from one study and a 47% drop from another are not contradictions; they measure different things. We name the method next to each number and never merge figures from different studies into one calculation without saying so.

Is Google search declining in 2026? Search volume and market share data
This is the single most-asked question about the future of SEO, and the honest answer has two halves. Search volume is not declining. Clicks to websites are. Most confusion online comes from mixing the two.

Actual Alphabet, Jul 2026Google's global search engine share, Sep 2026
Estimate StatCounterGoogle's search volume is at an all-time high
In March 2025, Google stated publicly for the first time in years that it sees "more than 5 trillion searches" annually. Search Engine Land converted that into roughly 14 billion searches a day, 417 billion a month and about 158,000 every second. The last explicit figure before that was "at least 2 trillion" in 2016, so even allowing for a vague baseline, Google's query volume has more than doubled in a decade. SparkToro's Rand Fishkin, using Datos panel data, independently estimated about 5.9 trillion searches a year.
The money tells the same story. In Q2 2026 (April–June), Alphabet's Search & other revenue grew 17% year on year to more than $63 billion, within total revenue of $119.8 billion. Retail and finance were the biggest contributors. A business whose core product was shrinking would not grow search advertising revenue at double-digit rates.
But clicks to websites are falling
The problem for website owners is what happens after the search. SparkToro's 2026 analysis of US Google searches found that 68% ended without any click to any website, up from about 60% in 2024. Searches producing at least one click fell 9.51 percentage points, a 22.9% relative decline. Meanwhile, searches that led to another Google search rose 7.2 points. People are spending more time inside Google, refining, reading AI answers and comparing, and less time leaving.
The first crack: Apple Safari search decline
The first public signal that AI tools were eating into search came from an unexpected witness. In May 2025, Apple's senior vice president Eddy Cue testified in court that Google searches in Safari fell in April 2025 for the first time in 22 years, attributing the drop to AI tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. Google responded that it continued to see overall query growth, including from Apple devices. Alphabet's stock fell 7% that day, wiping out about $155 billion in market value. The episode showed how sensitive the market is to any sign of search substitution.
Google's search engine market share: slipping at the edges
StatCounter puts Google's worldwide search engine share at 89.94% in September 2026, with Bing at 5.29%, Yahoo 1.36%, Yandex 1.30%, DuckDuckGo 0.74% and Baidu 0.44%. Google has hovered around or just under the 90% mark, a level it had held above for most of the previous decade. Note that StatCounter measures traditional search engines only; it does not count ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity as search engines.

Did Gartner's 25% search volume prediction come true?
In February 2024, Gartner analyst Alan Antin predicted that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026 as AI chatbots and virtual agents became "substitute answer engines". It was the most quoted SEO forecast of the last three years. As of October 2026, Google's own reported volume and revenue have both grown, so the prediction has not come true for query counts. But a weaker version of it, that the traffic value of search for publishers would fall sharply, is very close to what the zero-click and CTR studies show.
Brand Chanakya view: Google is not dying; it is becoming a destination instead of a directory. For businesses, that shifts the goal from "rank and get the click" to "be visible in the answer, and be the obvious click when someone is ready to buy". Transactional and local searches still click through. Simple informational searches increasingly do not. Our SEO & SEM services are built around exactly this shift.
Zero-click search statistics 2026
A "zero-click search" is a search that ends without the user clicking through to any website. The answer was on the results page, or the user gave up, or they searched again. It is the most important metric for understanding why SEO traffic feels harder to win in 2026 even though rankings may be stable.

The trend line is unambiguous even if the methods differ. Jumpshot data in 2019 showed about half of Google searches ending without a click. SimilarWeb data for 2020 put it at about 65%. Datos panel data in 2024 showed 58.5% in the US and 59.7% in the EU. SparkToro's 2026 study, using Similarweb desktop and mobile panel data for January–April 2026, found 68.01%. That 2026 figure excludes the Google mobile app, where zero-click behaviour is likely even higher.
Search Engine Land, reporting the SparkToro study, cautioned that these numbers come from different providers and panels, so the year-on-year comparison is directional rather than exact. Still, the comparison that uses the same SparkToro series (60.45% in 2024 to 68.01% in 2026) is like-for-like, and it shows a clear rise.
Why zero-click searches are rising
- AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of Google searches by SparkToro's count, and when they do, click-through rates fall by nearly 60%. Estimate
- More Google-owned answers: maps, flights, hotels, shopping, weather, sports scores, calculators and knowledge panels resolve the query on Google. Estimate
- Refinement inside Google: searches that led to another Google search rose 7.2 points between 2024 and 2026. Estimate
- AI Mode: 0.34% of searches in the SparkToro sample moved into AI Mode in early 2026, a small but fast-growing share. Estimate
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode statistics 2026
AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries that appear at the top of many Google results. AI Mode is Google's full conversational search experience, built on Gemini. Together, they are Google's answer to ChatGPT, and they are the biggest single change to the Google results page in over a decade.

Estimate Pew Research, Jul 2025How much do AI Overviews reduce clicks? Four studies, one direction
Ahrefs analysed 300,000 keywords using Search Console data, half with AI Overviews and half without, from December 2023 to December 2025. In its February 2026 update, the top-ranking page's average CTR on keywords that later showed an AI Overview fell from 0.073 to 0.016, which Ahrefs reports as about a 58% lower CTR attributable to AI Overviews. Its April 2025 version of the same study had measured a 34.5% drop, so the impact deepened over 2025.
Pew Research Center tracked the real browsing of 900 US adults in 2025. Users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits that showed an AI summary, compared with 15% when no summary appeared, almost half as often. Only 1% of visits involved clicking a link inside the AI summary itself. And 26% of searches with an AI summary ended the browsing session entirely, versus 16% for traditional results. Google disputed Pew's methodology and query set.
SparkToro's 2026 study found AI Overviews on more than 20% of Google searches and a nearly 60% fall in CTR when they appear, consistent with Ahrefs.
CTR change when an AI Overview appears, by ranking position
The position-level detail matters. Ahrefs found the CTR penalty was steepest at position 1 (about −58%) and position 2 (about −50.8%), and much smaller at position 10 (about −19.4%). The top results, which used to collect most clicks, have the most to lose because the AI Overview sits directly above them and answers what they used to answer.
How often do AI Overviews appear?
Estimates vary a lot because AI Overviews trigger very differently by query type, country and month. SparkToro puts them on more than 20% of Google searches; Similarweb's marketing material cites 43%+ of US searches. Informational, health and "how to" queries trigger them far more often than navigational or transactional queries. Treat any single prevalence number as a snapshot rather than a constant.
Google AI Mode: the next layer of search
Google introduced AI Mode as an experiment in March 2025, launched it in the US and India, and added Hindi in September 2025 alongside Japanese, Korean, Indonesian and Brazilian Portuguese. By then it had more than 100 million monthly active users across the US and India combined. In its Q2 2026 earnings call, Alphabet said AI Mode had surpassed 1 billion monthly active users since expanding globally, and that it had merged AI Overviews and AI Mode into a single search experience. At I/O 2026 Google said AI Mode query volume had more than doubled each quarter.
Google's position is that AI search creates more searching, not less. It has said AI Overviews drive over 10% more queries for the types of searches that show them, and that commercial query volume has grown since AI Overviews launched. Both statements can be true alongside lower clicks per search.

ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude usage statistics 2026

ChatGPT users: the fastest-growing consumer product ever
ChatGPT had about 400 million weekly users in February 2025, 700 million by July 2025 and 800 million by October 2025. It passed 900 million in February 2026, and The Information later reported, based on figures OpenAI shared internally, that it reached about 1 billion weekly users in 2026, roughly seven months after its original end-2025 target. ChatGPT also became the fastest app to reach 1 billion monthly users in June 2026. OpenAI reported more than 2.5 billion messages a day in July 2025, and its revenue was about $6.7 billion in Q2 2026 according to The Wall Street Journal.
For perspective, Google's ~14 billion daily searches are still several times ChatGPT's daily message volume. But messages are not searches: many ChatGPT conversations are writing, coding or learning tasks. Third-party studies of how often ChatGPT actually runs a web search vary widely, from under a fifth of all conversations to more than half of commercial-intent prompts, depending on the prompt set.
AI chatbot market share: ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude
ChatGPT's dominance is shrinking even as it grows. Similarweb's worldwide web data shows ChatGPT's share of generative AI chatbot traffic falling from about 76% in June 2025 to about 53% in May 2026. Gemini rose from under 9% to about 27–28%, and Claude from about 2% to close to 9%. Over the same year, average monthly visits across AI platforms grew 70% to 9.5 billion, unique visitors grew 57% to 655 million and AI app downloads grew 58% to 4.4 billion.

Ads in ChatGPT and AI answers
The AI search ecosystem is following Google's path to monetisation. OpenAI began showing ads in ChatGPT in the US in February 2026, expanded to Europe, and started ads on the Free and Go tiers in India in August 2026 with 50 launch brands and a self-serve ad manager requiring a minimum daily budget of ₹725. Similarweb's analysis suggests about 26% of ChatGPT responses contain an ad. For brands, that means AI visibility will soon have both an organic (GEO) and a paid route, just like Google.
India search, SEO and AI statistics 2026
India is one of the most important markets in the world for both Google and AI companies. It has one of the largest internet populations, the second-largest ChatGPT user base, and some of the most aggressive free-AI offers anywhere.

StatCounter data for September 2026 shows Google with 96.63% of India's search engine market, far higher than its global 89.94%. Bing has 1.92%, DuckDuckGo 0.64% and Yahoo 0.57%. Android's dominance in India and Google's default placement on phones keep this share structurally high. For Indian businesses, classic Google SEO remains the single biggest organic channel.
ChatGPT users in India: AI's second-biggest market
In February 2026, Sam Altman said India had about 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, second only to the US, and the largest number of student users of any country. OpenAI opened a New Delhi office in August 2025. OpenAI data cited in 2026 shows about 80% of consumer messages from India come from users aged 18–34. Bain & Company's 2026 report with Flipkart adds that India's ChatGPT user base grew about 4.5x in 2025 to more than 160 million users (on Bain's broader definition), with Gen Z making up about a third.
Google says India has the highest usage of Gemini for learning globally. The IAMAI–Kantar Internet in India Report 2025 found that 44% of India's 958 million active internet users had used AI-enabled features such as voice search, image-based search, chatbots or AI filters.
The free AI war in India: Perplexity, ChatGPT Go and Gemini offers
No country has seen AI companies give away premium access as aggressively as India in 2025–26. These deals pushed hundreds of millions of Indians to try AI search for the first time.
| Offer | Details | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Perplexity Pro × Airtel | 12 months free Pro for Airtel's 360 Mn customers; new redemptions closed 16 Jan 2026 | Jul 2025 |
| ChatGPT Go | Sub-$5 India tier launched; later made free for a year | Aug & Oct 2025 |
| Google AI Pro for students | Free one-year AI Pro for Indian students | Sep 2025 |
| Google AI Pro × Reliance Jio | Free for 18 months to eligible Jio users | Oct 2025 |
| ChatGPT ads in India | Ads on Free and Go tiers; ₹725 daily minimum budget; 50 launch brands | Aug 2026 |
The Perplexity–Airtel data shows what these deals do. Sensor Tower data reported by TechCrunch shows Perplexity downloads in India jumped 625% month on month to 5.9 million in July 2025 and reached 56 million over the seven-month offer window. Monthly active users rose from about 2.6 million on average in H1 2025 to a peak of 22 million in October 2025. Even after the offer ended, Perplexity had nearly 14 million Indian MAU in July 2026, more than five times its pre-offer level.
Hindi, voice and vernacular AI search in India
Google added Hindi to AI Mode in September 2025, opening conversational AI search to a language spoken by about 609 million people worldwide. Combined with IAMAI's finding that 57% of Indian internet users are rural and that voice and image search are part of everyday behaviour, the direction is clear: the next 300 million Indian searchers will speak and photograph their queries, in their own language, and increasingly receive an AI-written answer.
Brand Chanakya view: In India, both games are being played at full scale at once. Google still owns 96%+ of classic search, so local SEO, Google Business Profile and product-page SEO remain non-negotiable. But with 100 million+ Indians on ChatGPT every week and free Gemini and Perplexity access widespread, a brand that never appears in AI answers is invisible to the youngest, most digital customers.
AI referral traffic statistics 2026

SE Ranking analysed anonymised Google Analytics data from 101,574 websites in 250 countries and territories, tracking monthly from January 2025 to April 2026. AI platforms sent 0.02% of all website traffic in 2024, 0.24% in 2025 and 0.32% in early 2026, about a 16x rise in two years, or roughly 1 visit in every 312. Organic search, by comparison, still delivered 42.75% of all traffic, about 134 times more than AI.
Where AI referral traffic comes from (2026)
Among AI sources, ChatGPT dominates referrals with 74.78% (down from 79.74% in 2025, even though its absolute referrals grew 27%). Gemini sent 11.56% (up 231% YoY), Perplexity 7.23%, Copilot 3.51% and Claude 2.62% (up 320% YoY). StatCounter's AI chatbot referral tracker for September 2026 shows a similar order: ChatGPT about 80%, Gemini about 11%, Perplexity about 6%, Copilot under 2% and Claude about 1%. BrightEdge reported ChatGPT referral traffic doubled (+101%) between January and August 2026.
Similarweb noticed a structural change too: after ChatGPT's May 2026 update, the share of ChatGPT referrals landing on homepages jumped from about 26–29% to about 62–63%. In plain terms, ChatGPT increasingly recommends a brand and sends people to its front door, rather than to a specific blog post. Citations within US ChatGPT answers also rose from about 1.6% of prompts in June 2025 to about 6.8% in May 2026.
Does AI traffic convert better than organic traffic?
Several studies suggest AI visitors are unusually valuable. On Ahrefs' own website, AI search sent just 0.5% of visits in a 30-day window but produced 12.1% of signups, roughly 23 times the conversion rate of traditional search visitors. A Semrush study in June 2025 estimated AI search visitors are worth 4.4 times more than traditional organic visitors. These are company-specific findings and should not be treated as universal benchmarks, but the logic is sound: someone who has already asked an AI to compare options and arrives at your site is usually further along in the decision.
What this means: AI referral traffic is not yet big enough to replace SEO. Organic search still sends over 100x more visits. But AI visitors convert better and AI is shaping which brands people search for on Google in the first place. The winning strategy is both, not either. Pair it with lead generation landing pages so the visitors you do earn actually convert.
Search behaviour shifts: Gen Z, social search and conversational queries
Search is no longer one box on one website. Discovery now happens across Google, AI assistants, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok-style short video, and the shape of queries is changing too.
- As early as July 2022, Google SVP Prabhakar Raghavan said internal data showed almost 40% of young US users (18–24) looking for a place to eat skipped Google Maps and Search and went to TikTok or Instagram instead. Estimate
- A 2025 TikTok–WARC study of 1,000+ US consumers found 86% of Gen Z respondents searched on TikTok weekly, compared with 90% using Google Search weekly, and 60% made weekly queries on AI search platforms. TikTok has a commercial interest in this finding. Survey
- The same study found fashion and beauty queries 26% more likely on TikTok, with cooking (+23%), entertainment (+22%) and DIY (+15%) also skewing to social video. Survey
- In India, 588 million people (61% of internet users) watch short video, making it a default discovery surface. Actual (IAMAI–Kantar)
- Bain reports about 70% of Indian Gen Z shoppers discover brands online, browsing fewer search listings before buying. Estimate
- Alphabet says Google is handling longer, more complex queries as AI Mode grows, and searches that lead to another Google search rose 7.2 points between 2024 and 2026 (SparkToro). Estimate
From keywords to conversations
A classic Google query is three or four words: "best dentist Udaipur". An AI query is a paragraph: "I have sensitive teeth and a budget of ₹20,000, which dentist in Udaipur is good for root canals and has weekend appointments?" That difference is why AEO and GEO exist. Ranking for a short keyword is not enough; your content must answer the specific, multi-condition questions people now ask, and your brand must be mentioned in enough trusted places for an AI to recommend you.
Pew's finding that 26% of AI-summary searches end the session shows the other side: for simple questions, people now accept the answer and leave. The queries that still produce clicks are the ones where users need to compare, verify, book or buy.
SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what's the difference?
The three terms are often used loosely. Here is a practical way to separate them.
SEO: Search Engine Optimisation
Getting your pages to rank in classic search results and win the click.
- Where: Google, Bing results pages
- Goal: rankings, clicks, traffic
- Levers: technical health, keywords, content, links, local SEO
- Measured by: rankings, organic sessions, conversions
AEO: Answer Engine Optimisation
Getting your content chosen as the direct answer.
- Where: featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants, AI Overviews
- Goal: being the quoted answer
- Levers: question-led structure, concise answers, FAQ and schema markup
- Measured by: snippet and AI Overview presence
GEO: Generative Engine Optimisation
Getting your brand mentioned, cited and recommended by AI models.
- Where: ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot
- Goal: brand mentions, citations, recommendations
- Levers: entity clarity, third-party mentions, original data, reviews, consistent facts
- Measured by: share of AI answers, AI referrals
They are layers, not replacements. Ahrefs found that only 12% of URLs cited by AI also rank in Google's top 10, which shows GEO is not simply "SEO done well". But AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's index, and ChatGPT's search features draw on web search results, so a site that is technically weak or invisible in search will struggle in AI answers too. Good SEO is the foundation; AEO shapes the content; GEO extends your reputation beyond your own website.
| Question | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main surface | Blue links | Snippets, PAA, voice, AI Overviews | LLM chat answers |
| Unit of success | Ranking + click | Being the answer | Being mentioned / cited |

AI citation statistics: what content do ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity cite?
GEO depends on one question: when an AI writes an answer, which sources does it trust? Several large citation studies in 2025–2026, covering hundreds of millions of AI citations, give a fairly consistent picture. A May 2026 synthesis by 5W Public Relations pulled together data from Profound (680 million citations), Goodie, Surfer, Semrush, Peec AI and Ahrefs.

- Wikipedia made up about 47.9% of ChatGPT's top-10 source share in Profound's data and 18.4% of all AI citations across verticals in Surfer's study. Estimate
- YouTube accounted for about 23% of finance citations and about 28% of health citations in AI Overviews. Estimate
- LinkedIn appeared in roughly 15% of Google AI Mode responses in Semrush's study. Estimate
- For commercial queries, Perplexity leans on review and comparison sites such as G2, Gartner, NerdWallet, PCMag, TripAdvisor and Yelp. Estimate
- In health, AI Overviews cite institutions such as NIH, Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic heavily. Estimate
AI citations are volatile
AI citation patterns can change overnight. In one widely tracked episode, ChatGPT's Reddit citation share fell from close to 60% of responses in early August 2025 to about 10% by mid-September 2025, and Wikipedia's from about 55% to under 20%, while press-release wires, Forbes and Medium gained. Perplexity and AI Mode did not show the same swing. The lesson for brands: do not optimise for one platform's current habit; build a broad footprint of trustworthy mentions.
Earned media beats owned media in AI answers
Across the studies, third-party and earned sources (news outlets, review sites, analyst reports, community discussions) dominate citations, while brand websites are often absent from B2B category top-10 lists. ChatGPT mentions brands about 3.2 times more often than it links to them, according to Seer Interactive. That makes GEO partly a PR and reputation exercise: what others say about you matters as much as what you publish.
Brand Chanakya view: This is why original data pages, like this one, matter for GEO. AI engines and journalists both prefer to cite sources with unique, dated, clearly attributed numbers. A brand that publishes its own research gets cited; a brand that only rewrites others' content rarely does.
Is SEO dead? Myths vs reality in 2026
Industries most affected by zero-click and AI search: sector-by-sector view
The shift to zero-click and AI answers does not hit every business equally. The data points to a clear pattern: the more a query can be answered in a paragraph, the more clicks it loses. The more it involves a decision, a location, a booking or a purchase, the more it still sends traffic. Here is how that plays out across the sectors Indian businesses operate in.
| Sector | Exposure to zero-click / AI answers | What the data shows |
|---|---|---|
| Health & hospitals | High for informational, lower for "near me" | AI Overviews cite NIH, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic heavily; YouTube is ~28% of health citations in AI Overviews |
| Finance & insurance | High | YouTube is ~23% of finance citations; comparison sites like NerdWallet dominate commercial answers |
| Travel & hospitality | Medium–high | Citation rate in ChatGPT answers about 23% in travel prompts (Similarweb); TripAdvisor is a top Perplexity source |
| Automotive | Medium | Citation rate around 20% of prompts (Similarweb); dealer and test-drive searches remain local and transactional |
| B2B software & services | High in research phase | Vendor sites often absent from AI top-10 sources; G2, Gartner and TechRadar dominate |
| Professional services | Lower citation rate | Under 4% citation rate in ChatGPT prompts (Similarweb): AI often answers without linking |
| Local services (clinics, coaching, salons, real estate) | Lower for transactional | Map packs and Google Business Profile still drive calls and directions; AI Mode increasingly summarises reviews |
| E-commerce & D2C | Mixed | Product research moves into AI; purchase still happens on marketplaces and brand sites. Retail and finance led Google's Q2 2026 search revenue |
Citation-rate figures are Similarweb's category estimates for US ChatGPT prompts; date ranges not specified by source. Treat as directional.
Health and medical: hospitals, clinics and doctors
Health is among the most AI-exposed categories. AI Overviews draw heavily on institutional sources, and in the citation studies compiled for 2026, NIH appeared in roughly 39% of healthcare AI Overview citations, Healthline about 15%, Mayo Clinic about 14.8% and Cleveland Clinic about 13.8%. A hospital's blog post explaining "what is a root canal" now competes directly with an AI summary built on those institutions. What still converts is the local, high-intent search: "best orthopaedic surgeon in Udaipur", "IVF centre near me", "cardiologist available Sunday". That makes Google Business Profile, doctor profile pages, reviews and local landing pages more important than generic health articles for most Indian hospitals and doctors.
Education and coaching institutes
India has the world's largest number of student ChatGPT users and the highest Gemini usage for learning, according to OpenAI and Google. Informational education content (explanations, definitions, exam tips) is very likely to be answered inside AI tools. Schools, colleges and coaching institutes should focus SEO on admissions, fees, results, location and comparison queries, and use AEO-friendly FAQ content for questions parents actually ask before choosing an institution.
E-commerce and D2C brands
Product discovery is moving into AI answers and social video, but checkout still happens on Amazon, Flipkart, quick commerce apps (see our Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart account management) and brand websites. Retail was one of the largest contributors to Google's Q2 2026 search revenue, which shows shopping intent on Google remains strong. For D2C brands, the opportunity is to be named in AI answers to "best X for Y" questions, which depends heavily on reviews, marketplace ratings, comparison articles and creator content rather than on the brand's own product pages. Our e-commerce marketing services cover exactly this.
B2B and professional services
B2B buyers increasingly ask AI to shortlist vendors. The citation studies show vendor websites rarely appear in AI top-10 source lists for B2B categories; review platforms, analyst firms and editorial publishers do. For an Indian manufacturer, exporter, IT services firm or consultancy, GEO means being listed and reviewed on the platforms buyers trust, publishing case studies and original insights, and getting mentioned in industry media. See our digital marketing for SMEs & MSMEs and solar companies pages for examples.
Local businesses
Local search is the most resilient part of SEO. A person looking for a dentist, a CA, a salon or a property dealer still needs a phone number, directions and reviews, which means a click, a call or a map tap. India's 96.63% Google share and the importance of Google Maps on Android keep local SEO highly valuable. The change is that AI Mode and AI Overviews now summarise reviews and compare local options, so review quality and volume increasingly decide who is recommended.
Brand Chanakya view: In our work across hospitals, schools, D2C brands and local businesses, the pattern is consistent: generic blog traffic is down, but leads from local and commercial pages hold up when those pages are well-built. The fix is rarely "more blogs". It is better service pages, stronger Google Business Profiles, more reviews and more third-party mentions.
How to measure SEO, AEO and GEO in 2026
If clicks per search are falling, measuring success only by organic traffic will make good SEO work look like failure. Here is a measurement framework that reflects how search actually works now.
| Layer | Metric | Why it matters now | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Organic conversions and leads (not just sessions) | Clicks fall but high-intent visits remain | Google Analytics 4, CRM |
| SEO | Impressions and average position | Visibility can grow even when clicks fall | Google Search Console |
| SEO | Branded search volume | AI exposure often shows up later as people searching your name | Search Console, Google Trends |
| Local | Calls, direction requests, website taps | Local actions bypass the website entirely | Google Business Profile insights |
| AEO | Featured snippet and AI Overview presence for target questions | Being the answer is the new position #1 | Manual checks, rank trackers with AIO tracking |
| GEO | Share of AI answers: % of target prompts where your brand is mentioned | Shows whether AI recommends you | Monthly prompt testing across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode, Perplexity |
| GEO | AI referral sessions and conversions | Small volume, high value | GA4 referral source filter |
| GEO | Third-party mentions and reviews | AI cites earned media more than owned | Brand monitoring, review platforms |
A simple monthly AI visibility test
You do not need expensive tools to start. List the 20 questions your best customers ask before they buy, the way they would actually type or speak them. Each month, ask those questions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Perplexity. Record whether your brand is mentioned, whether a competitor is mentioned instead, and which sources the AI cites. Within three months you will see which questions you own, which you are losing, and which third-party sites you need to be present on.
Remember the volatility the citation studies found: platform behaviour can shift sharply within weeks. A single month's result is a snapshot; the trend over a quarter is what matters.
How to track AI referral traffic in Google Analytics
Most analytics setups lump AI referrals into general "referral" traffic. Create a custom channel group that captures referrers such as chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. Given that studies show AI visitors convert at several times the average rate, even a few dozen AI sessions a month can be commercially significant, and you will want to see them separately.
A 90-day plan to adapt to AI search
Most businesses do not need to rebuild their marketing from scratch. They need to rebalance. Here is a practical sequence that follows directly from the data in this report.
Days 1–30: Measure the real picture
Pull 16 months of Search Console data and compare impressions with clicks for your top 50 queries. Where impressions are flat or rising but clicks are falling, AI Overviews or other SERP features are likely absorbing the click. Separate branded and non-branded queries. Set up the AI referral channel in analytics. Run your first 20-question AI visibility test and record which competitors appear.
Days 31–60: Fix the pages that make money
Rewrite your top service, product and location pages so the first paragraph directly answers the main question, followed by clear sections for price, process, proof and FAQs. Add or repair structured data. Update your Google Business Profile with complete services, photos, posts and a steady flow of genuine reviews. These pages are the ones that still earn clicks from commercial and local searches, so they deserve the most attention. If the pages themselves are slow or outdated, a website rebuild or high-converting landing pages usually come first.
Days 61–90: Build reputation beyond your website
Identify the five to ten third-party sites AI engines cite for your category, using your prompt tests. Get listed, reviewed or featured on them. Publish one piece of original data or a detailed case study that others in your industry would want to reference. Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews on the platforms AI reads. Then run the AI visibility test again and compare.
This sequence keeps classic SEO, which still drives over 40% of website traffic, as the backbone, while adding the AEO and GEO layers that decide whether you are visible in the answers your customers increasingly read first. It also avoids the most common mistake we see in 2026: cutting SEO budgets because traffic fell, without checking whether leads and branded searches actually fell with it.
Paid search and ads in the AI era: Google Ads and ChatGPT ads
Organic visibility is only half of search. Paid search is changing too, and the numbers suggest it remains strong.
- Alphabet's Search & other revenue grew 17% YoY to over $63 billion in Q2 2026, with retail and finance as the largest contributors. Actual
- Alphabet reported a 20% improvement in showing highly relevant shopping ads and 15% more conversions or conversion value for advertisers using its AI-powered campaigns at a similar return on ad spend. Actual (company claim)
- OpenAI launched ChatGPT ads in the US in February 2026 and in India in August 2026, with a ₹725 minimum daily budget and 50 launch brands. Actual
- Similarweb estimates about 26% of ChatGPT responses contain an ad, with about a third of ad impressions in the first response of a session. Estimate
For Indian advertisers, this creates both opportunity and risk. Google Ads remains the most mature and measurable paid search channel, and its AI-driven campaign types are taking over more of the targeting and bidding. ChatGPT ads add a new surface where users are in research mode. The brands that will use these well are those whose organic foundation (clear landing pages, good reviews, consistent brand facts) already converts the traffic they pay for. Our performance marketing services and SEM management are built for this mix.

The future of SEO and AI search: 2027–2030 outlook
Predictions about search have a poor track record, as Gartner's 25% forecast showed. So instead of a single bold forecast, here are the trends that the 2025–2026 data makes very likely to continue, and what each means for your search strategy.
1. Fewer clicks per search, but more searching overall
Zero-click share rose from about 60% to 68% in two years in the US, while Google's total volume and revenue kept rising. Expect this to continue as AI Overviews and AI Mode merge into one experience. Informational traffic will keep shrinking; commercial, local and transactional traffic will hold up better.
2. AI answers become a second "page one"
With AI Overviews at 2 billion+ monthly users, AI Mode past 1 billion and ChatGPT around 1 billion weekly users, being named inside an AI answer is becoming as important as ranking. Measuring "share of AI answers" for your category will become a standard marketing KPI, alongside rankings and traffic.
3. AI search gets ads, and AI visibility gets a paid route
ChatGPT ads went live in the US (February 2026), Europe and India (August 2026). Google already runs ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode. By 2027, most brands will plan AI visibility the way they plan Google today: an organic layer (SEO, AEO, GEO) and a paid layer.
4. The AI market fragments
ChatGPT's share of AI chatbot traffic dropped from ~76% to ~53% in a year as Gemini and Claude grew. Different engines cite different sources (only ~11% domain overlap between ChatGPT and Perplexity). A GEO strategy built around one platform will be fragile.
5. Brand, reputation and original data become ranking assets
AI engines cite Reddit, Wikipedia, YouTube, review sites and news far more than brand websites, and mention brands more often than they link to them. Brands that earn mentions, reviews and coverage, and publish original data, will be recommended more often.
6. India becomes a vernacular, voice-first AI search market
With Hindi AI Mode, 57% of internet users in rural India, 588 million short-video viewers and 100 million+ weekly ChatGPT users, Indian search will increasingly be spoken, visual and multilingual. Content in Hindi and regional languages, product images and video will gain value.
7. SEO budgets shift from volume to value
As informational clicks shrink, the economics of content change. Publishing dozens of generic blog posts to chase traffic made sense when every ranking brought clicks. In an AI-first results page, fewer, deeper assets win: strong service and product pages, original research, detailed case studies, expert-led guides and genuine reviews. Expect agencies and in-house teams to report less on raw traffic and more on leads, revenue, branded search growth and share of AI answers. Businesses that judge SEO only by sessions will under-invest at exactly the moment visibility in answers is being decided.
| Indicator | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 (latest) |

The AI visibility checklist for Indian businesses
Based on the data above, here is a practical checklist we use when auditing a brand's search visibility across Google and AI engines. You can run most of it yourself.
Foundation: classic SEO (still 42.75% of web traffic)
- Your site loads fast on mobile, is fully crawlable and indexable, and has no broken key pages (a well-built website makes this far easier).
- Each service, product and location has its own page targeting the real terms customers use, including Hindi or regional terms where relevant.
- Your Google Business Profile is complete, verified, categorised correctly and collecting fresh reviews (local searches still click through).
- You track conversions from organic search, not just traffic, so falling clicks don't hide rising leads.
Answer layer: AEO
- Key pages open with a direct, 40–60 word answer to the main question, then expand.
- You use question-based headings that mirror how people actually ask, and FAQ sections on service pages.
- Structured data (Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, FAQ, Article) is implemented and error-free.
- Tables, steps and comparisons are written in clean HTML that AI and snippets can extract.
Generative layer: GEO
- Your brand name, address, services and key facts are identical across your site, Google, social profiles, directories and marketplaces.
- You are mentioned on the third-party sites AI trusts in your category: news, industry publications, review platforms, Reddit/Quora discussions, YouTube.
- You publish original data, case studies or research that others can cite, clearly dated and attributed.
- You test monthly: ask ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode and Perplexity the top 20 questions your customers ask, and record whether you are mentioned.
- You track AI referrals separately in analytics (chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai, copilot, claude.ai).

Methodology: how we compiled these statistics
The Brand Chanakya Research Team compiled this report in October 2026 using only publicly available information.
- Source hierarchy: company statements and filings (Google, Alphabet, OpenAI) first; established measurement firms (StatCounter, Similarweb, Sensor Tower) and large-sample studies (Ahrefs, SparkToro, SE Ranking, Pew Research) second; reputable news coverage third.
- Labels: "Actual" means company- or government-reported. "Reported" means a company figure reported by the press but not yet officially published. "Estimate" covers panel data, studies and surveys. "Projection" means a forecast. "Calc." means our arithmetic on published data.
- Different methods: clickstream panels, Search Console data and surveys measure different things. We name the method and never merge figures from different studies into one number.
- Geography: most zero-click and CTR studies use US data. We have flagged where India-specific data is not available rather than assuming.
- Commercial interest: several studies come from SEO tool vendors, AI companies or agencies. We note this where relevant; treat vendor benchmarks as indicative.
Search is changing quickly. We will update this page as new data is published. If you spot an outdated number, write to us.
